27 Cool Things I’ve Done in My Life

I’ve been reading James Altucher’s blog recently and it’s inspired me to start writing again. I like his approach to marrying it to working the idea muscle as he calls it. So, on my 41st birthday, I thought it would be appropriate to think about all the cool things i’ve done in my life (this is not in any particular order):

1. Gone hang gliding in Kitty Hawk – I was probably 14 at the time and it was a couple of days of lessons. I ended up crashing and breaking one of their kites. But it was a blast.
2. Caving – did this a few times while attending a day camp in Virginia when I was in the 5th and 6th grade. Not for the claustrophobic. At one point in the cave there was a tunnel we had to crawl through that was probably no more than a foot tall. Maybe 18 inches. Weird to have that much earth on top of you.
3. Sailed to Bahamas a lot when I was growing up in Florida.
4. Lived in 5 states while growing up: Florida, Virginia, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. Oddly, I ended up living 5 miles from where I was born.
5. Got married. That was cool. Still is.
6. Had kids. That was hard. Still is. But it is awesome.
7. Went on an Alaskan cruise for our 10th wedding anniversary.
8. As part of that cruise, we took a helicopter to a glacier and walked around on it. That was way cool.
9. My first roller coaster when I was a kid: the Python at Bush Gardens Tampa.
10. Every roller coaster since then.
11. Taking my kids on their first roller coaster: Space Mountain at Disney World.
12. Rock climbing in Potomac National Park. Part of the same camp where I went caving.
13. All the rope courses I’ve been on. There’s one challenge that always freaked me out: You climb a tree trunk (no branches on it) to a teeny tiny little platform maybe 12 inches by 12 inches. Then, you jump to a trapeze that’s just out of reach. Pretty scary when you’re 20 feet in the air.
14. Camped out under the stars in the mountains of North Carolina.
15. Hiked the Adirondack Trail. Not all of it. In fact, maybe only 30 miles. But I was 10. It was awesome.
16. Built and launched model rockets with my kids.
17. Flown stunt kites on Goose Rocks Beach in Maine.
18. Drove from Virginia to Georgia one night with a buddy of mine. We switched drivers while driving on 95. Ok, that’s probably more stupid than cool.
19. Pedro’s South of the Boarder.
20. Drove the PCH from Santa Barbara up to Pepperdine University or thereabouts in a convertible. I want to do that whole drive to San Francisco.
21. Sailed from Maryland to New York with my parents a few years ago.
22. Played golf at Torrey Pines a week before the US Open.
23. Filmed a commercial. Ok, I wasn’t the star and I was only 6 or so. My whole job was to point at something and took like 30 takes. It was for a local carnival or something and I don’t even know if it aired.
24. Went to a taping of It’s Gary Shandling’s Show. I used to love that show.
25. Climbed the falls at Ocho Rios in Jamaica.
26. Hiked around a lake in Ketchikan Alaska.
27. Gave a presentation to 300 insurance executives and kicked ass. Ok, I realize not many people would find that cool. But I do.
